Approximately 12% of the territory of the state of Rio de Janeiro is of well preserved Atlantic rainforest with some of the most famous hotspots for birding in the southeastern Brazil, including Itatiaia, Bocaina and Serra dos Orgãos National Parks, all of them only 1 to 3 hours driving from the city of Rio. The state and city of Rio de Janeiro are the home for 749 species of birds, several endemic to this area.
